The Legacy of Sartoria Mercalli: a new life for vintage fabrics

The Legacy of Sartoria Mercalli: a new life for vintage fabrics

When a tailor shop closes, it's sad, but it's not the end of the story – it's the beginning of a thousand new creations. Mercalli's fabrics continue to tell stories, just in different forms and in the hands of new creatives.

It was with a mixture of nostalgia and hope that we bid farewell to Sartoria Mercalli, a historic Milanese institution that permanently closed its doors earlier this year. For decades, the expert hands of Mercalli's tailors transformed fine fabrics into garments that dressed generations of Milanese with elegance and personality.

In early February, we organized a special event to sell all the fabric remaining in the tailor's shop, reorders, and fabrics from past collections.

During those two intense days, hundreds of emerging designers, sustainable fashion enthusiasts, and creatives had the opportunity to "rescue" and "adopt" the magnificent remaining fabrics: fine wools, refined silks, superior quality cottons, and a myriad of buttons, appliqués, and accessories that otherwise risked being forgotten.

It was moving to observe the enthusiasm with which each visitor explored the rolls of fabric, already imagining the new creations that would be born from them. Some buyers arrived with projects already in mind, others were inspired on the spot by the quality and beauty of the materials.

What struck us most was the variety of projects these materials will contribute to: artisanal clothing and accessories, fashion student's design degree, and even educational projects in fashion schools.

While Sartoria Mercalli's story as a business has concluded, the legacy of its materials continues to live on. The closure of this historic shop reminds us that the end of one cycle can generate endless new possibilities, especially when one has the courage to reinvent and reuse.

Thank you to everyone who participated and gave new life to these precious fabrics. ✨
